Record the Last Completed Update Step
When a Ledger Live firmware update failed, preserve what happened before attempting another update. Ledger Wallet, formerly Ledger Live, is the host application; Ledger OS is the software installed on the hardware. Write down whether the failure happened while fetching an update, asking for device approval, transferring it, or returning to normal operation. That sequence determines the appropriate recovery instructions.
First Rule: Preserve Active Installation
Read the host and hardware displays together. If an installation percentage or device stage is still changing, maintain the connection and power rather than testing a restart. An approval request on the hardware may be the missing next step. Do not substitute a general application-crash checklist for an OS process that is still actively working.
An explicit error after progress stops is a different condition. Save its wording and identify the displayed hardware state. The labels Update, Bootloader, and a normal dashboard should not all lead to the same improvised button sequence or a factory reset.
Establish Which Software Layer Is Involved
The official maintenance sequence distinguishes host software, Ledger OS, and blockchain apps. A transaction complaining about an old blockchain app is not necessarily a failed firmware installation. Conversely, downloading a fresh desktop installer does not itself update the hardware’s OS. Identify the component before repeating the action.
For a failed host download, check network access and obtain the supported app from the Ledger download channel. If the device installation has already entered a special update state, move to the exact model guidance rather than assuming that replacing desktop files completes the hardware operation.
Use the Model’s Recovery Instructions
Open Ledger’s guidance for interrupted device updates and select your hardware model and screen state. Some cases offer a supported continuation from My Ledger, but recovery steps differ. Follow the documented order and avoid changing hosts, cables, and button states simultaneously unless instructed. Keep a record of what each prescribed step produced.
If a mobile update failed, consult whether the relevant recovery case calls for the desktop app over USB. A model’s normal Bluetooth transaction support is not proof that every OS update can complete over the same connection. Move to another environment only at the appropriate recovery stage, never during progressing installation.
Prepare the Backup Without Exposing It
Before a further OS update on an initialized device, make sure you retain the existing protected recovery backup. Preparation is not a request to paste it into software. If that backup is unavailable, do not erase the only initialized device or accept an undocumented recovery experiment. Ask official support about the observed state while keeping all wallet secrets private.
Update Failure Questions
What should I verify after continuation succeeds?
Check that the hardware returns to its expected state and inspect its OS information. Complete any requested device-app restoration, then test the intended account operation separately from account-history synchronization.
Should I repeat a payment interrupted by maintenance?
First inspect any transaction ID on the correct network. An app error or restart does not establish whether an already approved transfer reached the blockchain, and repeating it can create a second payment.
