Plan the Reinstall Around Three Types of Data
To reinstall Ledger Live without losing data, distinguish blockchain records, hardware signing keys, and information held by the local app. Ledger Wallet is the current product name. These categories are affected differently by reinstalling program files, removing a user profile, or initializing a physical device.
The blockchain does not depend on a copy of your installer. Your hardware keeps the signing configuration, while the app can store names, preferences, account entries, and integrated-service records. A reinstall can be successful even though some local organization needs recreating afterward.
Check Access Before Removing Anything
Verify that the Ledger associated with your accounts still works and that you know which configuration it uses. An account created with an additional passphrase requires that same configuration for rediscovery. Avoid erasing an initialized device merely to make the application setup feel fresh.
If the app opens, preserve necessary transaction exports and non-secret notes about account networks and labels. Protect these as financial records. An export can document past activity but is not a backup of the private keys, and an extended public key should not be shared casually with a helper.
Choose the Scope of Reinstallation
Replacing the Program
For an incomplete update or damaged binary, a normal official installation may replace program files while retaining the local profile. Read your operating system’s installation and removal options. Do not assume every uninstall tool has the same behavior.
Starting with Fresh Local Data
A full app reset has a broader impact and should be deliberate. Expect to rebuild accounts and settings, and understand that provider history may not be reconstructible from the blockchain alone. Use documented support instructions rather than a general cleanup utility.
Moving to Another Computer
A new installation can legitimately start with no accounts listed. That does not require transferring funds to a newly created wallet. Reconnect the original signing device and discover the supported accounts on the correct networks.
Obtain and Run the Correct Installer
Use Ledger’s official download page, selecting the supported platform package. Finish any ongoing firmware operation before closing the app for ordinary maintenance. Follow normal replacement steps and check that the shortcut now opens the intended installed version.
Read download and malware warnings instead of treating them as routine obstacles. A repair guide that requires an unofficial wallet package, secret upload, or validation payment introduces a different problem. The installation process does not need access to your recovery words.
Reconstruct and Verify the Account View
Select the already-initialized-device path when prompted. Install required device apps as necessary and add each relevant asset and blockchain account. Use Ledger’s account-versus-app explanation if a hardware app is present but no account entry appears.
Check addresses and public history before restoring labels. Compare coin quantities after synchronization rather than only the displayed fiat total. Default currency settings, chart ranges, missing token filters, and an incomplete account list can all make the new interface look different.
Reinstallation Questions
Will the old password still be requested?
It may be if the protected local profile was retained. Replacing binaries is not automatically a forgotten-password reset; use the documented lock recovery process if that is the actual problem.
Must the replacement app restore the device from its phrase?
Not when the hardware is already initialized and functioning. Ordinary account discovery uses that device without entering its phrase on the computer.
What if the device is missing too?
Assess the backups and recovery routes you already have before removing useful local records. Reinstalling software cannot reconstruct missing key material from account labels or an email address.
