Start with the Wallet You Already Have
Ledger Live MacBook Air setup should preserve the distinction between the computer and the signing device. Ledger Wallet is the new name of the companion software. If your Ledger already controls accounts, the useful objective is to display those accounts on the Air, rather than initialize the hardware again.
Before replacing an old laptop, note which networks and account types you use. Local names such as Travel or Savings do not identify a blockchain account by themselves. Keep relevant public records private, because they can reveal your financial activity even without revealing signing keys.
Build a Simple Laptop Connection
Choose a USB data cable that fits the Air and your Ledger model. If an adapter is necessary, verify that the whole connection carries data. During the first test, leave a docking station out of the path where possible. Additional connectors create additional things to investigate.
On Apple silicon MacBooks, a newly attached accessory can require approval. With the laptop unlocked, respond to the prompt for the device you actually connected. Apple’s accessory access explanation clarifies why power can be present without permission for communication.
Put the Current Interface on the Air
Check the installed macOS release and processor through About This Mac. Use those details when reviewing the Ledger desktop download options. The Air family includes different generations, so advice based only on the laptop name is incomplete.
Complete the macOS installation, then open the version stored in Applications. Keep that installed location clear in your shortcuts. If you downloaded the package twice, confirm which copy you are launching before interpreting a version or update message.
Select the Matching Onboarding Branch
For hardware that is already configured, connect and unlock it using the device controls. Follow the check requested by the application. Adding the Air as another computer does not require a transfer between wallets or a fresh set of recovery words.
For a new hardware wallet, take time to complete its own setup and offline backup. Read prompts on the Ledger screen instead of accepting a preselected configuration supplied by another person. Never use a recovery sheet that someone filled out before the device reached you.
Recreate a Useful Account View
Install any necessary blockchain application through My Ledger and add the matching account in the computer interface. Distinguish a token’s name from its actual network. A balance held on one chain cannot be discovered by scanning a different chain with a similar address format.
Let the account scan complete, then check recent operations and a verified receiving address. Change local labels afterward. If a balance appears absent, compare account identity and synchronization before sending a transaction to test the display.
MacBook Air Setup Questions
Will closing the lid affect setup?
Keep the laptop awake and accessible while onboarding or updating device software. If your normal desk arrangement uses a dock, establish a direct working connection before adding that complexity.
Is my desktop password the Ledger PIN?
No. A computer login or optional application lock protects local access. Enter the hardware PIN on the Ledger itself; it controls a different security boundary.
Can I remove the app from the old laptop?
First confirm that the Air shows the intended accounts and that the matching hardware works. Removing an interface does not erase the blockchain, but local labels and useful records may disappear.
